Problem-Solving Methods
Problem Analysis
Problem analysis is a very basic step that has to be followed in order to solve an issue. It is done to find the root cause and find suitable solutions for it. The process initiates with defining the problem: identifying the type of problem, when, how it was found, and for how long it has been in existence. It involves a proper explication of the problem through study of the data collected, prioritization of the problems, and evaluation of sufficiency. The motive behind solving the problem is spotted, that is, the desired output, accomplishments after delivery, and time required to deliver.
Available Solutions Collection
Ideally, any problem solution should involve the proposal of various possible solutions and not a search for the single best answer. This will ensure that one finds the most appropriate solution to the problem at hand. Each option should not be evaluated until all the solutions are gathered. Early evaluation of the options will lead to the selection of a rather unsuitable option that may not solve the problem.
Assessing Possible Solutions
Problem-solving experts depend on a number of criteria to evaluate feasible solutions and they include:
- The solution should not create new problems apart from solving the issue at hand.
- All the people involved in the problem accept the alternative solution.
- It has to be easy to implement.
- The alternative solution has to be fitting in organizational constraints.
Using Positive Language in Thinking
Language is one of the most powerful problem-solving tools as it influence's one's thought process of thinking their way through a solution. Instructing with "What if." or "Imagine if." type expressions will help encourage a positive disposition to creative problem-solving and idea generation. On the other hand, negative or closed language, such as "I don't think" or "This isn't correct, but…", would be avoided altogether.
