Invention is the process of creating something new that has never existed before. This often involves gathering information or objects to produce something that benefits the world and humanity. Many inventions occur by chance; an incident happens, and the human mind perceives it, inspiring an idea. The human mind is inherently inventive, and when it encounters a chance event, it is driven to study the topic, formulate hypotheses, and ultimately arrive at a new innovation that changes the world. Inventions contribute to improving individual lives and advancing various fields, including social, economic, and industrial sectors, creating new job opportunities as a result of the invention process.

Popular Inventions That Have Benefited Humanity

Electronic Eye

The electronic eye is an electronic chip implanted in the retina through a prosthetic surgery. It converts external light into pulses that the brain can process, primarily used for people in middle age or older who suffer from macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, or other conditions that impair vision due to retinal cell damage. It is beneficial for those who previously had sight and still retain some healthy retinal cells, allowing the electronic eye to form neural connections in the brain. However, if the damage is severe in the visual cortex or optic nerve, the eye implant becomes ineffective.

The electronic eye consists of three components: an external camera mounted on glasses, a transmitter, and a stimulator chip implanted in the retina to transmit electrical pulses in place of damaged cells. The external camera and transmitter send high-frequency radio waves to the stimulator chip, which receives them, generating and sending electrical pulses through the remaining healthy retinal cells along the optic nerve path, enabling the person to see. The first electronic eye implant was performed in 2012.

Laser Surgery

Currently, lasers are used in precise surgical procedures by directing light waves accurately at the targeted area for correction and treatment. It was first used in eye surgery in 1960, and today, it is applied in various medical fields, including:

• Removing malignant and benign tumors and their affected tissues without damaging healthy tissue.
• Orthopedic surgery, joint surgery, and tendon treatments.
• Stopping bleeding.
• Cosmetic procedures, such as hair removal and transplants.
• Removing gallstones.
• Tonsil removal.
• Treating gastrointestinal issues, like ulcers.
• Corrective eye surgeries and glaucoma treatment.
• Removing warts.
• Treating cold sores.

Laser surgery has benefited patients by being more cost-effective and efficient than traditional surgeries. It is quicker and safer, leaving a small wound, which reduces bleeding. The heat generated by the laser also kills germs and contaminants, keeping the wound clean and safe from infection. This invention has served patients with weak bodies, saving their lives and allowing them to regain healthy bodily functions through less painful procedures.

The Internet

The internet is one of the most significant inventions of our time. It is an extensive information network operating with the TCP/IP protocol for transferring and exchanging all media. The internet initially appeared in the 1960s as a network called "ARPANET" created by the U.S. government and gained widespread use in 1995. Information on the internet can be found in written form or as video clips.

Some benefits and advantages of the internet include:

• It is an unlimited source of knowledge and learning resources, including tutorials and courses, often containing answers to any question.
• It allows for remote communication and saves time. Previously, sending and receiving messages took days or months, but now it happens in less than a minute, with options for voice and video communication.
• There are online communities for people with shared interests, where they can connect and learn from experts.
• The internet provides maps, directions, and contact details to help users reach their desired destinations globally.
• Individuals can access bank accounts, pay bills, and shop from home without leaving.
• The internet has become a source of income for many, allowing anyone to set up a website, display products or services, and market them.
• Companies post job openings, allowing job seekers easy access.
• It facilitates charitable giving through online donation platforms.
• The internet serves as an entertainment platform for watching movies, listening to music, or playing games.
• Household devices can be connected to the internet, enhancing their efficiency, saving time and money, and enabling remote control through computers or smartphones.

Key Inventions in Human History

The Telephone

The telephone is one of the most important inventions in communication today. It shortened distances, bringing people closer and allowing communication without being in the same place or traveling to meet. It was invented in 1876, credited to Alexander Graham Bell, who discovered while experimenting with the harmonic telegraph that sound could be transmitted as multiple signals over an electric wire. Thus began the journey of the telephone's evolution through various forms, including rotary phones, candlestick phones, wireless phones, leading up to today’s mobile phones.

The telephone’s importance lies in how it has simplified human life in various fields. In emergencies, people use the phone to contact authorities, report the situation and location without needing to go physically, saving time and enabling quicker response. In the workplace, the phone serves to enhance productivity and income; for example, it allows for easy communication within companies and employee meeting calls.

Its biggest use is in households, where no home is complete without a phone. It allows people to stay in touch with distant relatives and friends without traveling, saving money and time. It is also used for ordering food for delivery with a simple call.

Penicillin

Penicillin is a modern medical invention used as an antibiotic for infections. It was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928, with its first successful use in 1942. It became widely used among soldiers in World War II. Penicillin works as an antibiotic to kill or inhibit bacterial infections and can also treat non-bacterial conditions like leptospirosis, chlamydia in pregnant women, gastritis, ulcers, gas gangrene, Lyme disease, and typhoid fever.
